Turkish parliament votes in favor Sweden's NATO membership bid after a long delay

 Jan. 23, 2024.

Turkish Parliament has voted in favor of allowing Sweden to join NATO after their initial application in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Reuters reported that in Turkey's general assembly, 287 members voted in favor of letting Sweden join NATO, while 55 were opposed.

According to CNN, part of the reason for the 20-month delay was that Turkish officials accused Sweden of taking too lenient a stance on certain militant groups, specifically the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a group deemed as terrorists by the U.S. and EU. CNN reported that Sweden has since tightened regulations on these types of groups and has agreed to work with Turkey regarding security.

One of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's conditions for the approval of Sweden's bid was the commitment of the U.S. to allow the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, per CNN. Now Sweden is just waiting on Hungary, the last hurdle before they become a full member of NATO, Reuters reported.
