A hiker was found collapsed on the West Rim Trail in Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah. According to NBC News, the hiker was a 63-year-old man from San Diego, California. He was found unresponsive by other hikers who performed CPR while awaiting the arrival of park rangers who had been notified of the incident, per Associated Press. AP news also reported that upon arrival, rangers continued CPR and used an AED to try to revive the man.
NBC news noted a statement from the National Park Service, which read "After nearly an hour and a half administering CPR, treatment with the AED, and checking their condition with the heart monitor, the park consulted with a doctor (medical control) and the patient was pronounced dead." NPS believes that the man suffered a heart attack, though his death is under investigation by the Washington County Sherriff's Office, Utah Office of the Medical Examiner, as well as the park service.
NBC and AP both reported that the West Rim Trail has since been reopened to the public after a temporary closure for investigation.
