A gunman shot and killed two Burnsville Police Officers and a paramedic, and injured another officer on Sunday morning in Burnsville.
Officers had gone to a home on 33rd Avenue South, where an armed man was reportedly barricaded inside with his family, including seven children under the age of 15, according to CBS News. The situation turned into a shootout after authorities tried to negotiate with the man, when the officers and paramedic were shot.
The officers were identified as 27-year-old Paul Elmstrand and 27-year-old Matthew Ruge, according to a statement from the city of Burnsville. The paramedic was identified as 40-year-old Adam Finseth, who was also a firefighter.
Finseth was providing aid to the officers when the gunman shot him, according to ABC News.
Burnsville Police Department Chief Tanya Schwartz talked about the loss at a press conference on Sunday Afternoon.
"Today three members of our team made the ultimate sacrifice for this community. They are heroes." Schwartz said.
The gunman also shot Burnsville Police Officer Adam Medlicott, but he is expected to survive, according to NBC News.
