Goldberg starts by noting how the Covid-19 pandemic era of working from home showed in studies that people were becoming more productive, living healthier lifestyles, and actually had less stress. She attributes this to all of the time spent traveling or waiting for things in the office can now be spent at home doing little chores such as laundry, caring for a pet, working out, or preparing meals. 2023 Blockbuster film 'Oppenheimer' led Catie Edmondson on a quest to find how Congress paid for the hydrogen bomb

Jan. 23, 2024 Like many others in the summer of 2023, Catie Edmondson, Congressional correspondent for The New York Times, saw the historical drama documentary Oppenheimer, centered around physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the creation of the hydrogen bomb. Edmondson said on The New York Times' podcast The Daily that this film led to her following the financial rabbit hole of how Congress paid for the whole project, including the construction of the Los Alamos testing facilities. Edmondson wondered whether Congress knew about the project to approve the money as it was a top secret project, but the money that would have been needed to support it was no small sum. Her initial search found few results, some lackluster Wikipedia lines and a textbook with a very brief and vague description. Edmondson's starting point was to contact the library that kept former Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn's papers in Austin, Texas as he would have been in the room when the financial disc...

Jan. 23, 2024. Turkish Parliament has voted in favor of allowing Sweden to join NATO after their initial application in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Reuters  reported that in Turkey's general assembly, 287 members voted in favor of letting Sweden join NATO, while 55 were opposed.  According to CNN , part of the reason for the 20-month delay was that Turkish officials accused Sweden of taking too lenient a stance on certain militant groups, specifically the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a group deemed as terrorists by the U.S. and EU. CNN reported that Sweden has since tightened regulations on these types of groups and has agreed to work with Turkey regarding security. One of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's conditions for the approval of Sweden's bid was the commitment of the U.S. to allow the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, per CNN. Now Sweden is just waiting on Hungary, the last hurdle before they become a full member of NATO, Reute...
